GATE 2010 General Detail II

1. GATE 2010 will be conducted by IIT Guwahati
2. The pattern is set to change again from the previous pattern.55 questions technical + 10 questions General Aptitude - 100 marks
3. GATE Score will be valid for two years. Once again. (confirmed)
4. Now you can give the exam in 3rd year itself.(confirmed)
5. GATE 2010 - Pharmacy still remains unincluded.(confirmed) There is news that Pharmacy exam will be taken up by AICTE.
6. GATE 2010 examination for Mining Engineering (MN) and Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) papers will be computer based ONLINE examination.
7. GATE Board is currently in discussion whether to extend the validity of GATE 2009 score to 2010. But they have not decided yet. It will be decided by December.

Information Brochure and Application Form can be obtained on cash payment of Rs 1000/- (Rs 500/- for SC/ST/PD) from the designated Bank Branches.

Paper Pattern

Q.1 to Q.25: Will carry one mark each (sub-total 25 marks).


1/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.
Q.26 to Q.55: Will carry two marks each (sub-total 60 marks) 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.
Q.48 through Q.51 (2 pairs) will be common data questions. Each question will carry two marks 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.

Question pairs (Q.52, Q.53) and (Q.54, Q.55) will be linked answer questions.

The answer to the second question of the last two pairs will depend on the answer to the first question of the pair.

If the first question in the linked pair is wrongly answered or is un-attempted, then the answer to the second question in the pair will not be evaluated. Each question will carry two marks



There will be negative marks only for wrong answer to the first question of the linked answer question pair i.e. for Q.52 and Q.54, 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. There is no negative marking for Q.53 and Q.55.

Q.56 to Q.60 : From General Aptitude (GA) will carry one mark each (sub-total 5 marks).


1/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.
Q.61 to Q.65 : From GA will carry two marks each (sub-total 10 marks) 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.
All the papers bearing the codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PI and TF will contain few questions on Engineering Mathematics carrying 15 marks.
GATE Forms will be available from 22 September. At select banks and from IIT/IISc counters.

General Aptitude Syllabus :
Verbal Ability: English grammar, sentence completion, verbal analogies, word groups, instructions, critical reasoning and verbal deduction.

Numerical Ability: Numerical computation, numerical estimation, numerical reasoning and data interpretation.
Question pairs (Q.52, Q.53) and (Q.54, Q.55) will be linked answer questions.

Online Application form:
Application Submission Process


Step 1: Make payment
Application Fee - General & OBC - Rs. 800/-
Application Fee - SC/ST/PD - Rs. 400/-

Two payment options-
A) Online Payment: Online Payment is possible through HDFC bank payment gateway using Mastercard or Visa credit cards or debit cards of certain banks.
B) Offline payment: Offline payment is possible through a demand draft payable at Kanpur in the name of "Chairman GATE, IIT Kanpur". Please obtain this prior to start of the online filling of the application.


Step 2: Obtain Digital Photo and Scaned Signature.
Candidates are advised to have a digital photograph and scanned signature prior to starting the filling of application and these should be uploaded when applying Online. Otherwise they have to submit it later.

Step 3: Obtain SC/ST/PD Certificate (if applicable)
SC/ST and Disability Certificate should be obtained from appropriate authority. The Certificate should also scaned so that it can be uploaded when applying online.

Step 4: Apply Online
Candidates must follow the instructions provided on the online application form filling page.

Step 5: Post/Submission
An application which is incomplete by not uploading the necessary documents can be completed by sending those documents by post along with a covering note that can be printed on the online site. All such documents must reach the GATE office at IIT Kanpur by November 3, 2009.

Preserve aplication number
A successfully submitted online form will be provided an application number which must be preserved by the candidate. This application number shall be used for all other processes related to the GATE 2010 including those related to any enquiry.

Off Line
Application fee: Rs. 1000/- for GENERAL category and Rs. 500/- for SC/ST/PD category.

Candidate can obtain a packet containing:

* Offline Application Form
* Information Brochure
* Acknowledgment Card
* Envelope

from:

1. Designated Bank Branches corresponding to each zone on cash payment.
2. Zonal GATE Office by sending a request letter and TWO self-addressed slips along with a Demand Draft for appropriate amount.
3. Zonal GATE Office after handing over Demand Draft for appropriate amount.

Step 2: Obtain SC/ST/PD Certificate (if applicable)

SC/ST and Disability Certificate should be obtained from appropriate authority.

Step 3: Fill in the Application Form

Step 4: Post/Submission
Duly filled-in Application Form with appropriate enclosures must be sent by Registered or Speed post to The Chairman, GATE of the Zone, where the candidate prefers (corresponding to the 1st Choice of Examination City) to appear for the examination, on or before Tuesday, November 03, 2009 OR It can be handed over personally to respective Zonal GATE Office.
